Artist Philosophy

Artist Philosophy Statement

I am a collaborative artist weaving together the varied talents and generous inspirations
of those with whom I am privileged to work.

As a director and educator, I am comitted to practicing and fostering presence, connection, articulation, and transformation.
I envision a theatre of transformation where artists and audiences come together and are changed in the process –
expanded in empathy, enriched in community, enlivened in expression, and enlightened in the art of being human.

Presence - expanded in empathy
To create an environment of trust that is conducive to artistic exploration and risk taking
To model full presence by asking real questions and truly listening to answers
To relish time together and honor the work space
To be patient with one’s understanding

To expect positive outcomes and recognize the many ways that commitment is shown

Connection - enriched in community
To forge bridges between and among our diverse community
To participate in and nurture a vigorous and lasting artistic dialogue
To take responsibility for the safety of oneself and others
To “sit in a circle” to share goals, knowledge and decision-making
To delegate and accept responsibilities

Articulation - enlivened in expression
To clearly state objectives
To recognize the importance of both process and product
To show more than tell
To say yes to offers of others and use the critical response process to make offers
To acknowledge my own and others’ boundaries

Transformation - enlightened in the art of being human
To work toward knowing oneself without judgment & revealing oneself without competition
To cultivate the desire to learn and be surprised
To acknowledge multiple ways of knowing
To relish superlatives
To embrace listening despite the fear that we may be altered
